Competition title: adaptive urban greenscape sponsors: faciliteq and haworth registration fee and due dates: $20.00 registration fee per entry due by 01/04/2013_5:00 pm (p.s.t.) $30.00 late registration fee per entry after 01/04/2013 until submittal due date of 01/21/2013_5:00 pm (p.s.t.) submittal due date: 01/21/2013_5:00 pm (p.s.t.) no late submittals will be accepted or submitted for juror’s review. inspiration: due to the current economic downfall in new construction there is an overabundance of vacant land found in most metropolitan areas including downtown las vegas, nevada. the landowners of these vacant lots are left with no other viable option than to let the land sit undeveloped until the economy regroups itself. the side effect of this lack of development is that prime land and opportunities are sitting dormant while the need for urban greenscape remains unresolved. the question is now being asked: why not utilize these parcels of vacant land to address this urban necessity? how can an “adaptive urban greenscape” be designed so as to adapt to various site sizes, locations, and availability in the amount of time that a vacant parcel can be used? some of the key challenges are how to utilize these parcels of land in a way that does not permanently disturb the existing nature of the land and how it can be relinquished back to the owner as soon as they are ready to develop. similar inspiration can be found from the sponsors of this competition. faciliteq and haworth. these companies are sources of inspiration on how an interior environment can be transformed through the use of modular, adaptable, and versatile products and services. objective: design an “adaptive urban greenscape” that responds to the needs found within downtown las vegas, nevada. your design should address how a temporary, modular, and adaptable solution can react to the extreme climate conditions that are found in this region. your solution must be low maintenance; self sustaining and must serve a variety of uses that are needed within an urban greenscape. attention must also be placed towards the sourcing and consumption of water and power, security, accessibility, shelter, shade, materials, installation, etc… the solution is solely up to you. we are simply creating a topic with some objectives but are leaving the approach and conclusion up to you and your skill set. whether you are a designer who relies on hand sketching, model making, photo manipulation, or digital modeling to explain your ideas (or maybe even interpretive dancing is your thing), ultimately the solution is up to you. we want you to realize that this is not a school project that is being graded, a project you are submitting to your boss, or a commission you are submitting to a client. this is your opportunity to push the envelope and to create work for your own portfolio that is fresh, stimulating and experimental. site information: • a sample site has been selected for this competition due to its size, location and current undeveloped state and is to be used as the basis for this design competition. • approximately 140’ x 400’ (56,680 square feet or 1.3 acres) of vacant land that is found in the heart of downtown las vegas, nevada. see attached exhibits. • the site currently sits within a five minute walking distance from residential, office, industrial and civic buildings and uses as well as in the boundaries of the ever growing downtown las vegas arts district. • site plans have been created for your reference and use, see attached exhibits. • panoramic images of the site and its context have been created for your reference and use, see attached exhibits. • the following is a link to the site as shown in google maps. submittal requirements: • a maximum of (2) two digital format boards per submittal. • all boards must be in a horizontal rectangular format which is 1200 pixels x 2400 pixels. • there are no regulations on the composition, amount of text, colors, amount of images shown, font type, etc… on the boards. • file types must be submitted in jpg format. • file size must be less than 5 megabits per digital format board. • file naming must be as follows: (date of submittal_name of designer_competition name) for example: (2022-02-22_john doe_adaptive urban greenscape) • there should be no personal information leading to the identity of the designer on your submission boards. please do not place your name, logo, or personal contact information on your submission. selection process / jurors: • a first, second, and third place will be selected by a jury panel (final selections will be based on quantity and quality of submissions). • a panel of experienced designers with a knowledge base of the competition type will be assembled. the identities of the jury panel will be released at the time of the awarding process. • the review and selection process of the entries will be performed online. the composition of the boards should be designed accordingly. • the review and selection process is estimated to be completed within two weeks of the submittal date. • at that time the winning entries will be presented and posted on the website and all associated social media and publications. • the jury will be asked to review each entry based on the information stated in the inspiration and objective paragraphs listed above. • the identities of the designers and their submissions will be withheld from the jury panel as you will be judged solely on the quality of your submittal without any prejudice. prize(s) sponsored by faciliteq and haworth: • 1st place: $1,000.00 monetary prize (as if bragging rights aren’t enough). • 2nd place: $100.00 monetary prize. • 3rd place: $50.00 monetary prize. • winning entries will receive press outreach to local and regional publications. • the winning entries will be showcased at faciliteq headquarters. • all monetary prizes will be issued in the form of a money order in us currency and will be mailed to the wining participants within a timely manner. how to register, submit, and pay: • this competition is open to all designers. no matter where you are from, what design discipline you master, or your skill sets. as long as you think you have what it takes to compete with other designers, then you are the right fit for illicit design collective. • this competition is open to both single and team submissions. all team submissions will need to be submitted by one person, such as a team leader and will be registered, submitted and paid for as a single entry. • any designer interested in competing must complete the following steps: 1. access and use the register/pay/submit page to enter and submit the registration form. 2. once you have registered, proceed to the paypal link and process your secured payment.
